Disrupting the Industry: Top Tech Trends to Look Out for in 2023

Tech trends

Last November, we wrote about the top three recruiting trends to watch in 2023. We wanted to update our findings on how they’re related to the top tech trends we expect to heavily influence this year’s recruiting landscape.

We hope employers and job seekers in the industry read this blog closely. If you’re not already grappling with the effects of these trends and how they’re affecting your recruiting strategy or your job search, the chances are you will soon.

After reading this article, we hope you get in touch with us as soon as possible. We want to know your thoughts and how we can help you find the talent you need or land the tech job of your dreams.

Will the Traditional Search Engine Go Poof?

When there’s an all-hands-on-deck at Google, you know it’s because there’s big news in the tech industry. This latest development is about a chatbot called ChatGPT, which uses technology that Google even helped to create. So, what is it about ChatGPT that has one of the world’s largest tech companies in a code-red?

For years the tech industry has been nervously waiting for something this big to come along, something that could change the tech industry as we know it. This change appears closer than ever because of Google’s conspicuous response to ChatGPT. This little AI chatbot might make Google and other traditional search engines obsolete.

Step back and let that sink in. How we interact with the internet, how businesses are found, and how we locate and consume information could soon be vastly different. Such a change has the potential to upend everything from how corporations structure their online persona to creating a massive shift in the top jobs in the tech industry

An excerpt from a recent article in the New York Times helps put into perspective the gravity of this change: “ChatGPT has also demonstrated a human knack for abstract thinking. For example, one disillusioned Twitter user prompted the AI with the command: ‘write a haiku from the perspective of a copywriter who is feeling sad that AI might diminish the value of the written word.’ ChatGPT responded: “Words on a screen, now just a blur, machine takes the pen.”

Democratization of Tech with Open-Source Tools

Many people believe our digital economy is already critically dependent on open-source technology. But the tech industry is expected to rely even more on open-source tools and technologies to reduce costs and increase flexibility.

Open-source tools are software programs whose source code is available for anyone to use, modify and distribute. These tools are typically developed and maintained by a community of volunteers rather than a single company or organization. Examples of popular open-source tools include:

The increased use of open-source tools can change the tech industry in several ways.

One of the main benefits of open-source tools is that they are typically free to use, making them more accessible to small businesses and individuals who may not have the resources to purchase proprietary software. Additionally, open-source tools are often highly customizable, giving companies more control over their technology infrastructure.

Another way that the increased use of open-source tools can change the tech industry is by promoting innovation and collaboration. Because the source code for open-source tools is publicly available, developers worldwide can contribute to the development and maintenance of these tools, leading to faster progress and more advanced features.

Tech Trends for Quantum Computing and Blockchain

Many businesses are turning to quantum computing and blockchain for different reasons, but some of the main motivations include:

Quantum Computing:

  • Speed and power: Quantum computers are much faster and more powerful than classical computers, which can help businesses solve complex problems more quickly and efficiently. For example, quantum computers can simulate chemical reactions, optimize logistics and develop new drugs.
  • Security: Quantum computers can also break the encryption on classical computers, making them a powerful cybersecurity and data encryption tool.

Blockchain:

  • Transparency and immutability: Blockchain technology allows for a decentralized and transparent way of recording transactions, making it hard to tamper with the records. This property makes it particularly useful for tracking supply chain movements and enabling smart contracts, as well as financial applications such as digital currencies.
  • Decentralization: Blockchain technology allows for a decentralized system where no single entity controls the network, which can provide greater security and reliability. This can be especially useful for businesses operating in industries where trust is essential, such as finance, supply chain and real estate.

It’s worth noting that both quantum computing and blockchain are relatively new technologies, and the potential applications and use cases are still being explored and developed.

Additionally, the technology behind these still needs to be fully developed. As a result, it might not be accessible to many businesses yet, but it’s expected that as the technology matures, more companies will adopt it.

Virtual and Augmented Reality for the Workplace

It is commonly expected that companies are not far from using virtual and augmented reality for remote collaboration, training, and product demonstrations.

But similar to the effect that ChatGPT has had on Google, the amount of attention and money Meta is throwing behind virtual reality technology suggests there may be something bigger going on with VR technologies. What exactly Meta is after with VR technology is difficult to say. But to paraphrase the old saying: “In a gold rush, don’t dig for gold. Invest in picks and shovels.”

This is a saying we can apply to all of these predicted tech trends. However, for employers and job seekers looking forward to an uncertain landscape in tech, the key to getting ahead of these trends is people.
